The New Mexico Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (NMSCV) and the Texas Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (TXUDC) partnered with the Glorieta Battlefield Coalition (GBC) to construct a Texas Vista Site on the Glorieta Battlefield located near Pecos, NM. The first image below shows the Glorieta battlefield map with the interpretive trail shown as a dashed line. The interpretive trail is located on the ridge between Interstate 25 to the southwest and NM Highway 50 to the northeast. The trail is a little more than two miles in length and extends from Windmill Hill on the northwest to almost directly south of the Union Field hospital.
The Texas Vista Site is positioned adjacent to the interpretive trail and located between Trail Stops 8 & 9 -- refer to map below. The Texas Vista Site is situated such that it views Pigeon's Ranch -- site of intense combat -- from a position about 400 ft SW of and about 50 ft above Pigeon's Ranch.
The NMSCV raised about $2,000 & the TXUDC raised about $4,000 to pay for the Texas Vista Site that was completed by July 31, 2008 and consists of two rest benches and three interpretive panels -- each panel with dimensions of 36in x 24in. The Texas Vista site was formally dedicated Aug 1-2, 2008. To learn more -- click here.
