Types of Grants and Awards

The list below describes the types of grants NAAF has awarded in past grant cycles.

Research Grants

Research Grants are intended to support studies focused on understanding the mechanisms behind disease pathophysiology, translational application of basic discoveries, or provide insight into new therapies using translational, clinical, or epidemiologic approaches. Proposals must be hypothesis-driven and provide sufficient preliminary data to justify NAAF support. Awards are $100,000 maximum per year for up to two years.

Pilot And Feasibility Grants

Pilot and Feasibility Grants are intended to support studies that explore preliminary ideas and conduct proof-of-concept experiments. The goal is to stimulate the development of new research programs in the field of alopecia areata capable of competing for long-term funding from the National Institutes of Health or similar agencies in the future. Proposals must be hypothesis-driven and reflect innovative approaches to address critical questions in alopecia areata research. Awards are $40,000 maximum for one year.

Mentored Investigator Awards

Mentored Investigator Awards are intended to support postdoctoral researchers training to conduct alopecia areata research independently. The goal is to put recipients in a position to compete for larger grants in the future and to establish successful long-term careers with an enduring focus on research relevant to alopecia areata. Awards are $50,000 maximum per year for up to three years.

Bridge Grants

Bridge Grants are intended to support researchers who have submitted highly meritorious but unfunded K-type (career development) and R-type applications to the National Institutes of Health with a focus on alopecia areata. This grant is intended to provide a critical year of additional support to near-miss applicants whose projects were well-scored by the NIH, but not funded so that they can collect data that strengthens a future application. Awards are $100,000 maximum per year for up to two years for R-type bridge grants and $75,000 maximum for one year for K-type bridge grants.
