Sergeant William H. Curl
William H. Curl was born in North Carolina on 11 March 1823 and later moved to Benton County, Alabama. He joined the Confederate army as a sergeant on 1 January 1862 and as a member of Captain Maddox's Company, Oxford Rifles, Alabama Volunteers. After consolidation with other units it became Co C, 55th Alabama Infantry in February 1863. William Curl was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862. On 16 April 1863 Sergeant Curl was discharged as over age -- he was 40 years old. He died on 25 November 1884 at 60 years of age and is buried in the Musgrove Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Fayette County, Alabama.
