Captain Swisher was born on September 7, 1829 in Franklin County, Tennessee. His mother died in 1830 and he was apparently raised by relatives when his father, Henry, and uncle, James, moved to Texas in 1833. He came to Austin, Texas in 1845 with his father and married Martha V. Hogan on September 27, 1857. They lived in Bastrop and Austin, Texas until about 1873 when they moved to Garza (now named Lake Dallas) in 1873 with their family where he farmed. Martha died in 1899 and is buried here.
Captain Swisher mustered into service as a private on October 6, 1862 at Bastrop, Texas, with a horse valued at $100 and equipment valued at $12 – into Captain Jerry Wilkins Company, Madison Battalion, Mounted Partisan Rangers. Later, this became Company D, Second Battalion, Arizona Brigade, also known as Company D, Baylor’s Regiment, Texas Cavalry.
Captain Swisher died in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on October 26, 1920, at the age of ninety-one years and was buried in Lake Dallas, Texas.
Captain Swisher is an ancestor of Compatriot Mark Turner of NMSCV Camp 2033, Maj John S. Shropshire located in Albuquerque, NM.
