Sgt Alcide C. Knight

Alcide C. Knight was born in Natchitoches, Louisiana in 1844. He entered the Confederate Army in the State of Louisiana on April the 16th, 1861 at the age of 17 as a private in Company E of the 1st Special Battalion, Louisiana Infantry (Rightor’s) and eventually rose to the rank of sergeant. The six companies of the 1st Special Battalion moved to Virginia and served in the Department of the Peninsula. Lieutenant Colonels Charles D. Dreux and Nicholas H. Rightor, and Major James H. Beard were its field officers. Later, the battalion was placed under the command of General Griffith and in April of 1862 it totaled 315 effectives. In June of 1862 it was disbanded and its men transferred to other Louisiana commands. It is unknown which command or commands Sergeant Knight subsequently served in, but he was surrendered on May the 26th, 1865 at New Orleans and was later paroled at Alexandria, Louisiana.
