Camp 3002 Announcements & Meeting Minutes

Inaugural Meeting 12 August 2006, Fort Stanton, New Mexico

Minutes of Meeting

Meeting was called to order by Captain Larry Pope at 1735 hrs. Present were Captain Pope, Mike Bilbo, John Smith, Kress Barton, and Earl Pittman.

Captain Pope asked the members of the James Walker Camp what the primary purpose or mission of the Camp was and should be. A lengthy discussion followed. Mike Bilbo pointed out that the main function of SCV groups in southern New Mexico had been the locating and marking of graves of Civil War veterans and tending the graves at Fort Selden and Fort Fillmore.

It was then suggested that the primary function of the SCV in southern New Mexico was historical reenacting and that this was the unique feature of SCV members in the area. General agreement on this point was expressed by the group. It was agreed that supporting reenacting was worthwhile and that Camp # 3002 would continue to do so.

Another mission was suggested and endorsed by the Camp members. This was to try to locate the site where three members of Capt. James WalkerÕs Company had been killed by Kiowa Indians in August, 1861 near Gallinas Spring. When found, appropriate markers will be placed at the site. Sid Alford is trying to get permission for a memorial to these three men to be placed in the new State Veterans Cemetery about to be built at Fort Stanton He has already gotten the agreement of the national SCV leadership to pay for the markers. Earl Pittman suggested that efforts be made to include the CSA and Union dead in the ÒWall of HonorÓ of servicemen from New Mexico that Fort Stanton Inc. hopes to create at Fort Stanton.

The meeting was adjourned at 1814 hrs.

Respectfully Submitted

Walter Earl Pittman

Adjutant. Camp #3002
